The project.

Old fabrics carry memories. Weaving brings people together.

Living Threads connects generations through traditional rag-rug weaving and the creative reuse of discarded textiles.

Experienced weavers share their knowledge with younger people. Their craft and stories are recorded in photographs, film and sound.

Strips of red, green, ochre and pink fabric woven through a linen warp with one blue strip, and a red thread running through them.

One craft. Many names.

How a workshop works.

  1. Gather

Bring unwanted fabrics and, if you like, a memory attached to them.

  2. Learn

Experienced weavers share techniques and the history of the craft.

  3. Make

Weave together, with tasks suited to different ages and abilities.

  4. Share

Show the pieces and stories, with consent and the option to stay anonymous.

Our principles.

  • Weavers are credited and paid where funding allows.
  • Sharing a story is always voluntary.
  • We record how much textile we reuse. We don’t guess.
